The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world’s busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department’s main goal is to provide fire protection and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. The Department also works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes.

Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department’s core values. To that end, FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property.

FDNY not only responds to more than a million emergencies every year, its personnel also strive to prevent them by continually educating the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes.

Mission & Values

As first responders to fires, public safety and medical emergencies, disasters and terrorist acts, FDNY protects the lives and property of New York City residents and visitors. The Department advances public safety through its fire prevention, investigation and education programs. The timely delivery of these services enables the FDNY to make significant contributions to the safety of New York City and homeland security efforts.

  • SERVICE
The Department continues its unwavering call to protect and serve.
  • BRAVERY
Courage is the foundation of our character. Bravery is the ability to overcome fear through fortitude, instinct, compassion for others and training.
  • SAFETY
We strive to keep our citizens reasonably free from danger, especially deliberate, harmful acts. With the best equipment and training, the Department can reduce the risk to the public and its members at fires, emergencies and medical incidents.
  • HONOR
The enormous commitment necessary to perform the Department’s tasks requires excellence of character. We inspire each other through pride in our unit, which is a belief that every action reflects on all the members of the unit, both past and present.
  • DEDICATION
A commitment to the objectives of our mission is an essential part of our code of conduct. The faithful observance of duty calls for us to fulfill our obligations professionally and honestly.
  • EQUITY
The Department is committed to equitable recruiting and service delivery. The Department fosters a diverse workforce of qualified individuals from all communities; who are proud to maintain its long tradition of responding to all who request assistance, without consideration to race, creed, nationality or religion.
  • PREPAREDNESS
By combining all of the components of our core values, the FDNY will maintain its constant state of readiness to meet all threats and challenges, traditional and new.

Organization

The Fire Department is comprised of multiple bureaus, units and commands that work daily to achieve the Department’s lifesaving mission.

History

The origins of the Fire Department of New York City date back to 1648, but it wasn’t until 1865 that the modern-day FDNY first was established with the creation of the Metropolitan Fire Department (M.F.D.). The first professional unit, Engine Company Number 1, went into service on July 31,1865, at four Centre Street in Manhattan. The first ladder trucks were pulled by two horses and carried wooden portable ladders in sizes up to 73 feet. The first reference to the nomenclature F-D-N-Y was made in 1870 after the Department became a municipally controlled organization. The reorganized Department changed leadership, titles of rank and even its name. All usage of M.F.D. was removed and the lettering on all apparatus was changed to the now-familiar F.D.N.Y.

Around the same time, origins of the Department’s Emergency Medical Service began to take shape with horse-drawn ambulances dispatched by telegraph from Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

On January 1, 1898, the Greater City of New York was formed with the FDNY now overseeing all fire services in the newly formed boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. A new charter accompanied the reorganization of the City. The Board of Fire Commissioners, in place since 1865, was replaced by a single Commissioner.

About My Little Magic Shop

Dear Reader,

Magic exists everywhere.   In that feeling of familiarity when you first met your best friend.  That time your mom called only seconds after you thought her name. The butterflies from your lover’s first kiss.

Funny enough it’s so easy to dismiss these feelings or serendipitous moments as soon as they happen.  We live in a world, where if there isn’t a scientific explanation for that sparkle, it is simply labelled as magic and discarded.

Here at My Little Magic Shop, we believe that magic is simply anything we (as a society) don’t yet understand.

Just because we don’t understand something, don’t mean it doesn’t exist.  This magic in life is a huge part of what makes humans special and we are so lucky to be able to experience it.

At My Little Magic Shop, we not only want to help you embrace this magic, we want to help you become more aware of how much the Universe wants to continuously bring you all the things your heart desires.  We are so delighted to embark on a journey towards bringing more light and magic to this world.

This is why we founded My Little Magic Shop; to serve as a place anyone can go to discover new self care products, magnify their inner magic and remember the world is a magical place.  We strive to bring you products that do just that.

Our Little Spell Kits series, is an empowerment kit that helps you uncover your deepest desires and then push those desires out into the Universe so that you can manifest them into your life.  If you don’t tell the Universe exactly what it is you want, how will it know what to bring you, right?  One Little Wishlets are Brazilian inspired wishing bracelets, that allow you to make a wish, and wear that wish proudly.  Reminding yourself every time you look at it, that your desires are being orchestrated at that very moment.  A Little Zen Box is a monthly, self improvement, self care and inspiration box.  We focus on a different theme each month to help you incorporate that theme more deeply into your daily life.

In time, we plan to grow our little shop, offering a wide range of magical and self-empowerment related items, organizing various themed events, and serving as a true resource center. This is just the beginning, and we fully intend to expand our friendly community and help as many people as possible step into their magic and share their light!

Lots of Light & Magic

The Founders

My Little Magic Shop was created by Shereen Campbell (the founder, CEO, and a seasoned astrologer) and Natalie Villanueva (the Web Guru, CTO, creative and technology wizard) who are both passionate about making metaphysical, esoteric ideas and spiritual practices understandable and easily applicable.

Outside of Astrology, Shereen has done Buying, Planning and Merchandising for major fashion brands for almost 10 years. She also writes on all things magical over at horocope.com.  A candle ritual and an epiphany later, she decided to create a place where folks (hippie fashionistas?) like her could find more hands on guidance for self improvement and self care.  Natalie was excited to jump on board and share her branding and design skills after discovering Astrology actually works. It only takes a seed…

A native of Brooklyn, NY with roots in Barbados, An educator (MS. &  Ed.S ) with a love for the outdoors, nature and natural/pure healthy foods and products, especially in the products that we feed our body both internally and externally.  Handcrafting soap, creams and other products is not just a hobby or past time, but one of the most important endeavors that I have undertaken.  The purpose of making handcrafted soaps initially was to create beautiful fragrant and chemical-free products, but soon I found it much more important that others understood why and how using them is so important to their overall health over an extended period of time.  My products are made in small batches to insure the quality is  always consistent.  Hot process soaps can be created in a 24-48 hour time frame  Cold process soaps made upon request require a longer curing time and usually ship within 3-4 weeks to insure freshness.

In New York State, the Office for the Aging operates LTCOP through its Office of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman https://ltcombudsman.ny.gov/Volunteers/Volunteers.cfm.

The heart of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is its corps of specially trained and certified citizen-volunteer ombudsmen. Many volunteers are professionals from various fields. These dedicated Ombudsmen spend an average of four hours a week in each of their assigned facilities, advocating for the residents.

The New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman has chosen CIDNY-Center for Independence of the Disabled, NY http://www.cidny.org/ to manage the program for New York City. CIDNY was chosen because it had over 35 years of success advocating for people with disabilities.

What is CIDNY’s Consumer Action Network (CAN)?

CIDNY’s Action Network is made up of people with disabilities, as well as others who care about justice and equality for people with disabilities. Each of us brings our experience, our strengths and our energy to monthly meetings where we plan activities, learn about disability issues, and practice advocacy skills. Throughout the year, we take action steps to create change, such as:

  • Attending public events to find out whether they are accessible.
  • Sending email messages and letters to lawmakers asking them to vote for or against bills that matter to people with disabilities.
  • Meeting with state and city government officials to explain how their decisions affect our lives.
  • Testifying at public speak-outs about health insurance and special education.
  • Together we can change how the government, businesses, and others in our community treat people with disabilities.

For more information about CAN or to get on our mailing and phone lists, please contact Monica Bartley, Community Outreach Organizer, 646-442-4153 or mbartley@cidny.org, or join online.
