The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world’s busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department’s main goal is to provide fire protection and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. The Department also works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes.

Organization

The Fire Department is comprised of multiple bureaus, units and commands that work daily to achieve the Department’s lifesaving mission.

History

The origins of the Fire Department of New York City date back to 1648, but it wasn’t until 1865 that the modern-day FDNY first was established with the creation of the Metropolitan Fire Department (M.F.D.). The first professional unit, Engine Company Number 1, went into service on July 31,1865, at four Centre Street in Manhattan. The first ladder trucks were pulled by two horses and carried wooden portable ladders in sizes up to 73 feet. The first reference to the nomenclature F-D-N-Y was made in 1870 after the Department became a municipally controlled organization. The reorganized Department changed leadership, titles of rank and even its name. All usage of M.F.D. was removed and the lettering on all apparatus was changed to the now-familiar F.D.N.Y.

Around the same time, origins of the Department’s Emergency Medical Service began to take shape with horse-drawn ambulances dispatched by telegraph from Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

On January 1, 1898, the Greater City of New York was formed with the FDNY now overseeing all fire services in the newly formed boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. A new charter accompanied the reorganization of the City. The Board of Fire Commissioners, in place since 1865, was replaced by a single Commissioner.

About NYC Nurse-Family Partnership

Are You Pregnant with Your First Baby?

NYC Nurse-Family Partnership (NYC NFP) is a program for new mothers that provides support, guidance and information to help you become the best mom you can be. As a first-time mother, you will be connected to your own personal nurse who will be there with you to support you through your pregnancy and in your new role as a mother. Your nurse will answer your questions, listen to your concerns and offer useful information so you can have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

NYC NFP serves pregnant women and girls and is available at no cost to you and regardless of your immigration status or that of anyone in your family.

Who can sign up for the program?

  • Women or teens in New York City who are pregnant with a first baby and meet low-income requirements can participate.
  • You can participate whatever your age or immigration status.
  • You can participate as early in your pregnancy as you like but no later than your 28th week.

MetroPlus Health Plan Overview

Since 1985, MetroPlus Health Plan, Inc., a prepaid health services plan, has been offering low or no-cost quality health insurance to eligible New Yorkers. At MetroPlus, we have a strong focus on primary and preventive care. Together with our providers, we continually work to improve member awareness of preventive services and assist members in receiving these services. Our network includes primary care providers, specialists, behavioral health and OB/GYN providers at over 30,000 sites across New York City. In addition to hospital-based providers, our members can also obtain primary and specialty care services at many community-based doctor’s offices and neighborhood family care sites.
Our Care Management Programs help members with chronic conditions stay healthy and provide support to help them manage their illness. Diabetes and Asthma programs encourage members to partner with their PCPs to reduce complications from illnesses and lead healthier lives. Care Management is also available for members with SSI, Behavioral Health, Complex Medical or Transplant issues.
MetroPlus Member Services is available in 13 languages, Monday through Saturday, 8 am – 8 pm. MetroPlus also has access to numerous other languages through interpretation services. At MetroPlus, we are committed to assuring access to quality comprehensive health care, health education and customer services to our culturally diverse membership.

My Little Magic Shop was created by Shereen Campbell (the founder, CEO, and a seasoned astrologer) and Natalie Villanueva (the Web Guru, CTO, creative and technology wizard) who are both passionate about making metaphysical, esoteric ideas and spiritual practices understandable and easily applicable.  

Outside of Astrology, Shereen has done Buying, Planning and Merchandising for major fashion brands for almost 10 years. She also writes on all things magical over at horocope.com.  A candle ritual and an epiphany later, she decided to create a place where folks (hippie fashionistas?) like her could find more hands on guidance for self improvement and self care.  Natalie was excited to jump on board and share her branding and design skills after discovering Astrology actually works. It only takes a seed…

A native of Brooklyn, NY with roots in Barbados, An educator (MS. &  Ed.S ) with a love for the outdoors, nature and natural/pure healthy foods and products, especially in the products that we feed our body both internally and externally.  Handcrafting soap, creams and other products is not just a hobby or past time, but one of the most important endeavors that I have undertaken.  The purpose of making handcrafted soaps initially was to create beautiful fragrant and chemical-free products, but soon I found it much more important that others understood why and how using them is so important to their overall health over an extended period of time.  My products are made in small batches to insure the quality is  always consistent.  Hot process soaps can be created in a 24-48 hour time frame  Cold process soaps made upon request require a longer curing time and usually ship within 3-4 weeks to insure freshness.

CIDNY’s Action Network (CAN) is made up of people with disabilities who come to CIDNY for individual services, as well as others who care about justice and equality for people with disabilities. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (or LTCOP) is a federal advocacy program dedicated to protecting people living in long term care facilities. In New York State, the Office for the Aging operates LTCOP through its Office of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman https://ltcombudsman.ny.gov/Volunteers/Volunteers.cfm.

The heart of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is its corps of specially trained and certified citizen-volunteer ombudsmen. Many volunteers are professionals from various fields. These dedicated Ombudsmen spend an average of four hours a week in each of their assigned facilities, advocating for the residents.

The New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman has chosen CIDNY-Center for Independence of the Disabled, NY http://www.cidny.org/ to manage the program for New York City. CIDNY was chosen because it had over 35 years of success advocating for people with disabilities.

What is CIDNY’s Consumer Action Network (CAN)?

CIDNY’s Action Network is made up of people with disabilities, as well as others who care about justice and equality for people with disabilities. Each of us brings our experience, our strengths and our energy to monthly meetings where we plan activities, learn about disability issues, and practice advocacy skills. Throughout the year, we take action steps to create change, such as:

  • Attending public events to find out whether they are accessible.
  • Sending email messages and letters to lawmakers asking them to vote for or against bills that matter to people with disabilities.
  • Meeting with state and city government officials to explain how their decisions affect our lives.
  • Testifying at public speak-outs about health insurance and special education.
  • Together we can change how the government, businesses, and others in our community treat people with disabilities.
